Montserrat,
known as ‘the Emerald Isle’, is pear-shaped and has a
land area of 39 square miles. About 11 miles long and
seven miles wide, its nearest neighbors are Nevis,
Guadeloupe and, 27 miles to the northeast, Antigua. Three
mountain ranges dominate the island. The Soufrière Hills
rise to 3,000 feet above sea level at the summit of Mount
Chance. This is an active volcano and it has been erupting
since 1995. The southern half of the island has been
evacuated, including the capital, Plymouth, which burned
down in August 1997. This is not currently an island for
the tourist but we reprint some of our background
information here for the sake of interest.
