 Aruba,
smallest and most westerly of the ABC group, lies 25
kilometers north of Venezuela and 68 kilometers west of
Curacao, at 12° 30’N, outside the hurricane belt. It is
31.5 kilometers long, 10 kilometers at its widest, with an
area of 184 square kilometers. The average yearly
temperature is 27.5°C, constantly cooled by northeast
trade winds, with the warmest months being August and
September, the coolest January and February. Average
annual rainfall is less than 510 millimeters, and the
humidity averages 76 percent. Like Curacao and Bonaire,
Aruba has scant vegetation, its interior or cunucu is a
dramatic landscape of scruffy bits of foliage, mostly
cacti, the weird, wind-bent divi divi trees and tiny
bright red flowers called fioritas, plus huge boulders,
caves and lots of dust.
